Sketchy Lent: Crossing the Red Sea
A visual devotional on trusting God in the run up to Easter.
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. (Exodus 14:21-22, ESV)
Trusting God in the Face of Impossibility
After the Israelites left Egypt, they found themselves in an impossible situation. With the Red Sea in front of them and Pharaoh's army pursuing them from behind, they cried out in fear and despair. They even accused Moses of leading them into the wilderness to die.
But God had a plan. He instructed Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea, and all night, a strong east wind blew, dividing the waters and allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground. What had seemed like an insurmountable obstacle became a pathway to freedom and salvation.
Sometimes, we face situations that seem impossible, where we can't see a way forward. We may feel trapped, afraid, and hopeless, just like the Israelites at the edge of the Red Sea. But God specialises in making a way where there seems to be no way.
The season of Lent is a time to remember that God is with us, even in the midst of our impossible situations.
It's an opportunity to cry out to Him in faith, trusting that He has a plan and a purpose, even when we can't see it. As we journey through this season, let's ask God to give us the courage to step out in obedience, knowing that He is able to part the waters and make a way for us.
Reflections
Think about a time when you faced a seemingly impossible situation. How did you respond?
Are you facing a "Red Sea" in your life right now? Take some time to bring that situation before God, asking Him to make a way where there seems to be no way.
Is there an area of your life where God is calling you to step out in obedience, even when you can't see the way forward?
Prayer
Father, thank you that you are faithful and with us in every situation. Thank you when we can’t make a way, you can. Help us to trust you, knowing that nothing is impossible for you. We bring our “Red Sea”s to you this day; make a way where we cannot.
Amen.
