Sketchy Lent 2025: Creation
Welcome to the first visual devotional for lent 2025 in "The Wilderness" series
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." (Genesis 1:1-2, ESV)
God fills the wilderness
Genesis tells us that in the beginning there was a wilderness. In Hebrew, the words “Without form and void” (tohu wa bohu) mean the same thing as the wilderness. One of the patterns we see in the Bible is that God takes empty things, and fills them. It makes sense after all, how can you fill a cup that’s full? You need to remove the content first and then it can be filled.
How can we have God in our lives if there’s no room?
The season of Lent is a time of emptying ourselves to make space for God. It’s an opportunity to fast from food and earthly pleasures and feast on God instead. It’s also a reminder that when we feel lost and empty God’s presence is near, waiting to fill us and create something beautiful.
Reflections
Can you remember a time that felt chaotic, empty or meaningless? How did you experience God's presence during that time?
Are there any areas of your life that feel formless or void right now? Take a moment to invite God's Spirit to hover over those areas and bring forth new life.
What practices or disciplines can you embrace to create space for God to work in your life this season?
Prayer
Father, thank you that you take empty things and make them whole. Help us to trust in you when we feel lost or life seems chaotic and uncertain. Thank you for the new life we have in you. Guide us this lenten season to make space for you and fill us with your spirit so we can fill the wilderness around us.
Amen
