"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end…"
Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 ESV
The Judeans had a lot to worry about. There were looming threats from surrounding nations like Assyria.
In this time of crisis, the prophet Isaiah delivered a promise--a child symbolizing hope and God's presence would be born.
Isaiah's prophecy, while initially possibly referencing a soon-to-be-born royal child, we see in Matthew chapter 4 that it also points to a greater hope, The greatest hope -- Jesus Christ
The first candle we light at advent represents hope. It's the hope we can all find in Jesus today. Jesus' arrival is the sign that God is still with his people. That even in times of darkness, God is with us.
This has deeper meaning for me as the last year has been a dark time. And yet I have still had the candle of hope from Jesus which has lit my way.
I hope this reflection brings you comfort as it has for me. This Advent, as we light our candles, let each flame be a prayer that carries the hope of Christ into the darkest corners of our world.
Application: Lighting the candle of hope for others
At this time of year, many people are walking in darkness: lack of sunlight (at least in the northern hemisphere!), loneliness, depression, and not knowing God. As Christian's, we are called to be "the light of the world". Take a moment to think "how can I bring the hope of Christ to those around me this week?"
It doesn't have to be anything big — sometimes small things can start a massive chain reaction.
Prayer
(Suggestion: light a candle as you pray and reflect).
Loving Father, thank you for sending your son to be the light of the world. Thank you that although we had no hope of our own, in Him we have hope. Renew us this advent season and help us to bring the hope found in Jesus to those around us this week and beyond. Amen
Thank you for joining me in this short devotional. I'll see you next week to light to second advent candle.
Chris
