If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9 NIV)
As we continue through Lent, it’s good to remember the assurance of forgiveness we have in Jesus.
John reminds us that we merely need to come and confess to be forgiven. Admittedly that means we have to recognise our sin rather than deny it as he warns us in the surrounding verses. But we don’t have to work for our salvation. Instead, we can work out of salvation.
When we fully appreciate what Jesus has done for us, it leads to a transformed life and transformed actions. Unlike the servant whose debt was forgiven, we can joyfully forgive others who wrong us.
And it brings peace.
Although confessing is unpleasant as we have to face what we’ve done, when we realise we have been completely forgiven there is a peace that flows from it.
Prayer
Father, I’m sorry for where I have fallen short, where I’ve sinned through action or inaction. I’m sorry for people I’ve hurt from my actions and for any occasion where I haven’t carried your name faithfully. Please, forgive me.
Thank you for your assurance that you will forgive my sins.
Amen
P.s. I fell behind on the devotionals due to family circumstances but I’m believe I’m up to speed again. I hope you’re enjoying them.
